its true sense, may just add quality years to its
life. Our focus is the well-being of canines; they
deserve long, happy and healthy lives.
Is
your dog overweight or obese? Your veterinarian can
help you assess your dog's weight and determine the
optimal target weight for him. Pudgy pooches and corpulent
canines are common in today's ever-busy households.
Unfortunately, canine obesity is a serious health
problem suffered by millions of dogs each year. Mostly
due to a combination of over-eating and lack of exercise,
it is not too late to make the pledge to get your
canine fit. Any out-of-shape dog can become fitter,
but what can you do?
We
have compiled these 'Slim & Trim" tips to
assist in your personal canine health & fitness
program. Your goal is to help your dog become slimmer
and trimmer, and therefore happier and healthier!.
This takes real dedication on your part, but the efforts
are truly worth it! Give your dog the best life has
to offer! |

| These
tips are a guide only. Your dog is an individual! |

 |
- Ensure
your dog gets enough regular exercise. Make time
for exercise at least once a day.
-
Long walks, stick or ball fetching, play sessions,
or strenuous training help keep muscles in shape
and bodies functioning.
- Make
canine-friends to help your dog get his quota of
calorie-burning. Two or more dogs will usually run,
romp, and play together and thus, exercise each
other.
- Swimming
is excellent fat-burning exercise. Take your dog
to a dog-friendly reserve, beach, dam, pond or river.
- Enlist
the services of a Dog Walker if your dog needs more
walking than you can provide.
- Add
variety to his fitness routine to encourage fun
and relieve boredom. The sky's the limit!
- If
your dog is unfit, don't demand too much too quickly.
Gradually increase the pace and distance of his
walks. Taking his leash off at the park will encourage
him to run around more as he follows exciting smells
and trails.
- Many
dogs put on weight as they get older; when less
active and metabolic rate slows down. Include steady
walks as part of their day.
- If
your dog is extremely obese or has other health
problems, please consult your veterinarian before
starting an exercise program.

-
Are you overfeeding? Closely monitor your dog’s
caloric-intake.
- Consider
the different factors that all play an important
role: stage of life, size of dog, type of dog breed,
type of dog-food, etc. Seek veterinarian advice
if in doubt.
- Remember
a dog's dietary needs changes as he progresses through
different life stages (puppy, adult, senior).
- Some
breeds, like the Basset Hounds and Cocker Spaniels,
tend to be less active and put on weight more easily
than other breeds. Labradors are especially renowned
for scavenging and gluttony!
- Dogs
are scavengers. An empty bowl is often a trigger
for browsing or pleading behavior - it is not a
clue that your dog is starving!!
- Never
feed your dog from the dining table.
- Separate
your dog from snacking children. Don't let the kids
to feed your dog without supervision.
- Avoid
table scraps, poor diet, constant access to food,
and competitive eating in multiple dog households.
- Frequent
high-calorie treats should be omitted. Instead,
Delibones Barkery ™ offers the healthier alternative.
- Do
a household survey to determine who feeds the dog,
what, and when. Monitor this carefully!
- Study
the fat content in the dog food you buy. Fats are
energy sources; if the energy isn't expended, fats
merely add unneeded calories.
- Feed
more often. Divide your dog's daily ration into
2 or 3 feedings over the course of the day. This
helps, since it takes energy to digest food.
-
If your dog is more than 15% overweight, your veterinarian
may recommend a special food for weight loss.

 |
- Treats
are snacks, not main meals. Use them to reward or
train.
- Treats
are meant to complement (not substitute) the protein
most dogs get from their meat-based regular meals.
We recommend not exceeding 10% of total caloric
intake.
- Delibones
™ biscuits are a positive sources of nourishment.
They are a terrific added source of fresh fruit
and vegetable nutrients.
- Delibones
™ treats are of the highest quality. They
don’t contain any artificial additives, fillers,
emulsifiers, chemicals, colouring, or taste enhancers·
- Dogs
crave variety! Keep dogs interested by offering
different tastes/smells from time to time. Delibones
™ treats are savoury or sweet!
- Each
Delibones ™ biscuit is conveniently sized
in small, regular, or large pieces. We bake them
in this way to help in monitoring caloric intake,
according to the size of your dog.
- Try
our Lite Diet Bone, the biscuit specially formulated
with skim milk and low fat cheese, for the obese
dog.

| If
your dog's weight does not respond to dietary and
exercise management, consult with your vet to rule
out other potential causes of obesity, such as metabolic
disorders.
